We are coming up on a brand new year which means: New year, new set of goals. New resolutions & new aspirations.

If you're like me, you have the best of intentions & high hopes for each new year to be your "best year". The year you get your shit together. The year you become the best you & crush all of your goals. 
Hopefully, unlike me, you've made that a reality. However, the sad truth is, most of you ARE just like me. 

I dedicated 2018 to really diving into goals. How to evaluate what really matters to me, how to set attainable goals, & how to follow through & accomplish those goals.

& I think we've cracked the code. Not only that, but we want to share it with you!

As easy as it is to set goals, it seems like we all struggle to keep them.


Here are some of the top reasons people fail to meet their goals:
1. Your goals are too vague (more on setting S.M.A.R.T goals later!)
2. You are setting goals that don't excite you or are not relevant to what you actually want
3. You are not self motivated or disciplined
4. You procrastinate or make too many excuses
5. You don't plan ahead for the inevitable "bad days" or road blocks
6. You listen to the nay-sayers or anyone who discourages you
7. You set too many goals & bite off more than you can chew
8. Too many distractions. TV, games, your cell phone, too many nights out.
9. There are so many things that take your attention from what matters
10. You don't track your progress or hold yourself accountable
11. You lack a road map to your goals & don't break things down 
12. You don't adopt the right mindset

Once you become aware of what you might be doing wrong, you can fix it. So, what are you guilty of? How can you fix it?

First things first, you need to define your goals. What do you want to accomplish? Who do you want to be? What do you want to learn?

Where do you want to be in 20 years? 5 years? Next month? 
Know your big picture goals & then work backwards. Break them down into smaller goals.

Get an idea of what you want & make a list.

Here are some categories to think about when making your initial list: 
Family & Friends
Personal Growth/Character
Romantic Relationships
Fun & Recreation
Health (Physical & Emotional)
Things to Learn

Once you've set your goals, you might feel a little overwhelmed by your long list. You can't do it all. You need to remember to prioritize. Evaluate what is really important to you & eliminate what isn't. Revise your list & try to put things in the order of importance.

Now you break your vague list of goals into S.M.A.R.T.E.R goals.

What are S.M.A.R.T.E.R Goals?
 - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable
R - Relevant
T - Time-Bound
E - Exciting
R - Routine Bound

We will break these down further in our challenge group & show you how to make your goals S.M.A.R.T.E.R

We do have a worksheet that breaks down the S.M.A.R.T.E.R goals but our favorite basic S.M.A.R.T Goals worksheet can be downloaded for FREE here* if you don't have access to our closed group.

Once you have your goals defined & clear, you can break them down into smaller steps. 

If in a year you want to read 24 books, then you know you need to read 2 books a month & 1 every couple of weeks.  

Let's say you want to make more friends or strengthen the relationships you already have. Make it your goal to make time for friends once a week.

Some goals have to be broken down in to a "To Do" list. If you want to remodel your bathroom in 2019. your to do list might include: purchase materials, install flooring, paint walls, hang mirror, etc.

Not all goals are created equal. Which is why, if you don't have a plan or break them down properly, you can end up giving up.

Something that's helped me personally, is keeping a goal notebook handy. You can buy smaller spiral notebooks just about anywhere for super cheap & I'm telling you, they make all the difference. 

This is where I make my initial list, break things down, make my S.M.A.R.T.E.R goals, my To Do lists, track my progress, take notes on what works & what doesn't work. Everything. I look back through it often throughout the year & it's a constant reminder of my goals & a huge motivation to see what I've accomplished & mark things off my To Do's.

I've found it incredibly helpful in my process & highly suggest it to everyone. It keeps everything handy & in one place.
